Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Birch Bark Knife Sheath with Beth Homa-Kraus

Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Birch Bark Knife Sheath with Beth Homa-Kraus

This 3-day workshop meets on Friday, Jan. 24, from 6-9 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. 4 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 26, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Craft a custom birch bark sheath for a favorite sloyd knife in this intensive weekend workshop. Students will start by preparing a wooden sheath insert customized to their knife blade (no more than 5”) and birch bark weavers, while learning about traditional uses of paper birch and sustainable bark harvesting practices. Students will return the following day to weave their sheaths, encasing the wooden inserts in a double woven, diagonal weave. On the third day, students will put finishing touches on their sheaths and add optional embellishments, then add leather straps for hanging the sheath from a belt or clothing. This traditional Scandinavian design will keep your knife safe and be the envy of your friends!

An additional $50 materials fee is payable to the instructor.
