ASI Midwinter Folk Music Festival

WORKSHOPS 

1) Youth Swedish Fiddle Workshop
Saturday, February 15, 10:00-12:00
Cost: Free

Teacher: Maria Larsson
Workshop for intermediate level and up (completed Suzuki book #1). This workshop will include some of Maria’s favorite tunes from all over Sweden. Focus is on technical challenges and sound. Students will learn by ear and can bring recording devices. Sheet music at the end of the workshop.

2) Adult Swedish Fiddle Workshop
Saturday, February 15, 10:00-12:00
Cost: $20.00
Teacher: Paul Dahlin
How Our Music Goes: Whether you are a beginning fiddler or an advanced violinist this workshop will get you started on your journey in playing this traditional folk music. Audio/video recorders are encouraged.

3) Northern Swedish Music Workshop
Saturday, February 15, 10:00-12:00
Cost: $20.00
Teachers: Kip Peltoniemi and Renee Vaughan
This workshop will feature the rollicking and enigmatic tunes from the northernmost part of Sweden. The folk music of Norrbotten has a unique sound. All instruments are welcome.

4) Singing for Dancing Workshop
Saturday, February 15, 10:00-12:00
Cost: Adults $20.00 / Youth free
Teacher: Anders Larsson
The workshop will focus on tralling, the Swedish form of lilting used for singing for dancing. All singers welcome. Participants will sing for dancers at the closing concert.

5) Swedish Tunes for Strings Workshop
Saturday, February 15, 2:00-5:00 p.m.
Cost: Adults $30.00 / youth free
Teachers: Maria and Anders Larsson
This workshop will focus on tunes for the fiddle, but other stringed instruments are welcome. They will teach session tunes, their own favorite tunes and also explore sound techniques and how to inspire dancers.

6) Nyckelharpa Workshop
Saturday, February 15, 2:00-5:00 p.m.
Cost: Adults $30.00 / youth free
Teacher: Becky Weis
Modern tunes for Nyckelharpa by players from the last sixty years. Tunes are by Väsen, Näsbom, Tallroth, and Röjås.

CONCERTS

A) Opening Concert and Dance
Friday, February 14, 7:00 p.m.
Cost: $15 ASI members/$20 non-members, Free for youth under 18
Featuring special guests from Malmö Sweden, Maria and Anders Larsson, and the Twin Cities Nyckelharpalag. Joining in playing for dancing will be the ASI Spelmanslag.

B) Evening Concert and Dance
Saturday, February 15, 7:00 p.m.
Cost: $15 ASI members/$20 non-members, Free for youth under 18
Concert and Dance featuring the ASI Male Chorus, the ASI Cloudberries and Ole Olssons Oldtime Orkestra. Following the concert, Elise Peters will teach Swedish mixer dances.

 C) Closing Concert and Dance
Sunday, February 16, 2:00 p.m.
Cost: $15 ASI members/$20 non-members, Free for youth under 18
Closing Concert featuring the ASI Spelmanslag and the ASI Lilla lag. The second half of the performance workshop groups will play and sing the tunes they learned. A final Allspel will conclude the concert.
